Individual Record for Charles Thorne at

Late Shoreditch Industrial School

Shoreditch Industrial School was built by the Shoreditch Trustees of the Poor
in 1854 for 300 workhouse children of St. Leonard's Parish, Shoreditch (London).
In 1877 it came under the new school district of Shoreditch and Hackney. When
the district was dissolved in 1885 Hackney union took over the school, which
continued as a branch institution.

In 1894, the school was the subject of a scandal when dreadful cases of cruelty
came to light. Resulting in one of the female officials being sent to prison.

The site later became St Faith's Hospital, but has now been completely
redeveloped as office accommodation.
